When we talk about the famous "hill escapes" in India, Mussoorie(located in the state of Uttarakhand) comes in the top 5 among all. Maybe because it's a bit quieter than Manali and Shimla and maybe the view is just too beautiful. But as with the other famous hill stations, there is ease of access via automobiles and of course honking cars :(. It's almost like people are dying for some peace. Where else do they go?
Landour, a cute little picturesque place located around 5 km from the mall road of Mussoorie is a pleasantly quiet place among the woods in the upper regions of the Mussoorie hills. This January I had the pleasure of walking through the lanes of this beautiful place and was awestruck with the quietness of its foggy lanes, the deep wooden trails and cozy cafes.
There is no off trail as such, people usually take a cab to Landour. I took the foot route to really feel whether the Landour hype was real. I started from the Mussoorie mall road towards Landour among the hustle bustle of food joints, two wheelers and cars. Gradually, the road started to clear and views started to open up.
As the climb got gradual, I could see more greens and fewer houses, fresh air and dancing prayer flags.
After couple more kilometers, I was in Landour. Greeted with clouds and trees around me, this was one of the most serene paths I had walked upon.
I could halt for a while, sip water, enjoy the clouds, the silence and move on exploring more of Landour. The lanes took turns and opened up with views of old buildings and Kellogg Memorial Church.
If there is one place that is famous in Landour, it's the Landour Bakehouse! A cute wooden bakery cum cafe that offers delicious breads, pastries, chocolates and the amazing hot chocolate drink.
Another charm of Landour is its beautiful cafes all along the road leading to Mussoorie. We did our usual cafe hopping on our last day in the hills.
The Mudcup cafe - Crepes and pancakes
Lotte's - Americano and Hot chocolate (This is THE place for coffee connoisseurs)
Mogambo restaurant - Manchow soup and chowmein. Loved the Pup :)
Domas Inn - The perfect Tibetan vibe, we stayed there for a night as well. Tried authentic Tibetan dishes.
If you wish to enjoy some quiet time in the mountains free of the usual hill station vibe, then Landour is your place. I visited in the winters, you can choose any time of the year. I am sure it will charm you with its beauty.
Until next time.
