Disclaimer – This is going to hurt.
Masculinity refers to the male, who, in the ancient times were the providers, defenders, who were hunters facing adverse consequences on a daily basis to provide meat to the family. As the civilisation grew, technology got enhanced and work started to feel easy. Now the man doesn’t have to go out and hunt for food. Food is available in supermarkets and with grocery stores. There’s gender equality, no more single handedly providing for the family.
But what about the instinct, the hormones, the drive, the adrenaline ? Men’s innermost desire, their calling still lies in the dangers of the jungle, in the deep crocodile infested waters, on the prey to be brought down by the arrows, on the enemy army itching to separate heads off enemies’ bodies.
Lack of action towards this calling would lead to a frustrated, half lived oldies always into their past lamenting about the present.
To cater to this calling, we have adventures, we still have the nature with us, we still have deep oceans. It is said that even technology is incapable of stopping a natural calamity. During such times it is the instinct that overtakes in men to become protectors again and fight for their beloved.
Masculinity is listening to your calling and acting with instinct fearlessly and with self confidence.
But does this call for beards and trendy hair ? Of course to hunt and fight daily you have to be physically strong, fast and enduring. Does it call for a six pack, upper chest or large biceps? Does it call for money ?
The answer to all three is really “No”. One doesn’t need these three to practice masculinity and be a man. Rather the real characteristics are grit, sacrifice, physical strength and resilience, pain tolerance, mental toughness and love that drives these actions.
In today’s day and age, things are superficial, no one wants to dig in deep. There are trends that go viral at the click of a mousepad or touch of a mobile phone – “Look, that’s a real man !” And all you see is an uploaded pic on the internet of a guy flaunting his six pack and a beard with the same hair as Virat Kohli. His tagline would read – “After all the pain, here’s what you gain”. Well he might have gone through pain to achieve that body, but really man why would someone who has gone through some real shit post it online ?
Well maybe the pain threshold is lower than his ancestors’, maybe the AC gyms is all he was into, maybe some fine day his protein drink got spilled and he had nothing to take post workout. There have been so many evidences showing how temporary bodies are designed in commercial gyms with shortcut methods excluding all the pain and grit that goes with the journey of becoming strong.
The mentality speaks highly of vanity over function.
I am not totally negating the fact that bearded men are copiers. Maybe some are for real, possessing all the qualities of a true man. But it really is a shocker to see almost all of them started flaunting beards at once like a plague. Now that’s not normal and that for sure is for the look, for the external validation, for “Hey look at me, I am a man. I am so insecure in how I look that I have to copy my idol for you guys to approve me, most importantly for me to approve of myself.”
Somehow people think growing beards would automatically grow balls for them.
Put these people in situations where they have to man up for real and most would crumble. It all boils down to what’s inside – the qualities of a real man – the grit, the perseverance, the mental fortitude, the physical strength and valour. Having a Ferrari means shit if the person driving is a lame ass approval seeking baby.
Why the trend ? The idols – some celebrities who wear the look for some movie role or a show. The opposite sex – Well girls want real men, and they like real looking men too. But rest assured they don’t want hyenas wearing a tiger’s fur. Sadly majority of females are ok with a Manly looking guy. Doesn’t matter what’s inside because hey I am hollow too. Peers-again external approval. The unconfident self – That if I look like my hero, I’ll be one somehow.
For the world to be a better place, we need more real men. Even boys in pursuit of manhood would do, as they would learn in that journey. Currently, with the burst of social media and easy availability of communication, people are imitating trends to seek approval from others. Rewards are the “likes” and “comments”,no need to look within to improve the self, no need to go the extra mile to access one’s calling, no need to be a real man. Be a fake man driving BMW with a shallow babe next to him.
All the best.
